APPLES AND CROCKS Prep

Acrylic and Oil Still Life by Isabel Budd

The design comes from an original still life photo and is painted on an 8x10 panel for which frames are readily available. The design is based with acrylics and shaded and highlighted with an acrylic wash. Oils are glazed over the dry painting to add further definition and intensity.

MATERIALS:
SURFACE: 8X10 canvas, hardboard, or gessoboard panel

ACRYLIC PORTION:
Americana Acrylics:
antique white burnt sienna buttermilk raw sienna tomato red
bleached sand burnt umber honey brown russet uniform blue (You may substitute similar colors if they are in the warm (yellowish) tones & maintain contrast.)
Usual Supplies

OIL PORTION:
Supplies: dry palette paper or foam plates, paper towels, 2 small containers for liquids, a gift
box for transporting wet painting, oil glazing medium ( This was painted
with Galkyd mixed 50/50 with odorless mineral spirits.), brush cleaner-Turpenoid Natural, Gamsol, or odorless mineral spirits. NO TURPENTINE OR PAINT THINNER. These are highly volatile, toxic, and flammable. Ventilation is limited by the weather.
Brushes: soft synthetics The ones you used for the acrylics are just fine. A rinse in
brush \ cleaner followed by soap and water will clean them. Have 2 each of small, medium, and large filberts or flats, and 2 liners
Oil paint:
alizarin crimson raw umber burnt umber white
lemon yellow burnt sienna raw sienna

AN OIL PALETTE WITH MEDIUM AND CLEANER MAY BE ORDERED.

ACRYLIC PREP TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE CLASS. Refer to photo as a guide to color placement. Don’t agonize over it! The oil glazing will smooth and blend colors and values and allow you to adjust and correct any problems.

1. Coat the panel solidly with honey brown. On canvas apply 2nd coat to smooth surface further.
2. slip-slap colors to simulate old plaster. Start with antique white in the upper right and blend
into golden brown. Work burnt umber from the left side towards the center and blend
into the golden brown. Soften by blending a wash of burnt sienna from left to right. Adjust values by blending washes of antique white & honey from the upper right if necessary.
3. Put on the pattern except for the design on the right-hand crock’
4. Base the design elements:
table top: raw sienna
table edge: thinned, streaky burnt sienna
table front/leg: burnt sienna streaked on chisel edge suggesting wood grain
left crock: russet. When dry, re-coat with burnt sienna
